Abstract:

This talk will first briefly review definitions and debates related to a recently emerging technological area – Medium (MDES) and Long (LDES) Duration Energy Storage, aimed to clarify confusion or even misconception among both technical and non-technical communities. A few examples from my own research are then given to illustrate the MDES and LEDS development. This is followed by the re-iteration of the logic of and the debate on the needs for energy storage to address the climate change challenges. The main efforts are then made to explain, using an evidence-based approach, energy storage beyond electricity – the needs for multi-vector energy storage, highlighting challenges and opportunities where appropriate. Finally, an attempt is made to use an approximate market size under net-zero scenarios to suggest plenty of room for all energy storage technologies.
